William L. 'Bill' Taff

William L. "Bill" Taff, 84, of Monticello passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008 at 4:20 p.m. at his residence. He was born June 15, 1923 in Cuba, IL to the late Amos Clayton Taff and the late Leota (Beebe)Taff. He first married Evelyn Ammerman on May 1, 1948. She passed away July 15, 1989. He married Mildred Vigar on July 8, 2001 in Peru, IN. She survives in Monticello. Taff graduated from Hammond High School in 1943. He completed his Chemical Engineering degree at Indiana University. Mr. Taff was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp serving from 1943 until 1945. He was one of the Flying Tigers during WWII. He was a fighter pilot and was one of many who escorted the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan on August 6, 1945. The special plane that he flew was called the Weary Willie. He worked on the C&O Railroad for 6 years. Mr. Taff was a Project Engineer for NIPSCO in Monticello, retiring May 1, 1983. He was a member of the Faith Covenant Fellowship in Monticello. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and NRA. He enjoyed every job he ever had. He enjoyed a wonderful long retirement from NIPSCO. He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, caring for his chickens, and his dog. He also loved the outdoors, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed sitting by the campfire telling stories. Survivors include 2 Daughters, Jackie (Bill) Applegate of Monticello, IN, Rhonda (Steve) Gallaher of Royal Center, IN Daughter-in-Law, Kathy Taff of Winamac. 3 Stepsons, Dan (Sherry) Townsend of Wabash, IN, Don (Lori) Townsend of Winona, IN, Bob (Janet) Townsend of Roann, IN 2 Stepdaughters, Maria Sayger of Kokomo, IN, Diana (Ken) Gentry of Brownsburg, IN 5 Grandsons, Bill H. (Stefanie) Taff of Monon, IN, J.C. (Crystal) Taff of Pine Village, IN, Shane Applegate of Monticello, IN, Shawn Hayden of Monticello, IN, Josh Gallaher of Royal Center, IN, 1 Granddaughter, Mandy Luper of Livingston, TN Many Great Grandchildren, Many Step Grandchildren Many Step Great Grandchildren Brother, Jerry Taff, CA Sister-In-Law, Betty Ammerman of Peru, IN Step Son-in-Law, Kenneth Meredith of Mexico, IN. He was preceded in death by his Parents, first wife Evelyn, Son, Bill M. Taff, Sister, Virginia LeWark, and a Brother, Roland Taff. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Thursday, April 10, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Darl Clemons of the Faith Covenant Fellowhip officiating.
