Ronald A. "Ron" Schmierer, 73, of Monticello, died at 7:17am, Saturday, August 13, 2011 at his residence. Born March 25, 1938 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Edward Ella (Munn) Schmierer. On July 31, 1977, he married the former Patsy Grauel at the Federated Church in Brookston and she survives. Ron was a 1956 graduate of Klondike High School in West Lafayette. He co-founded R&M Wholesale in 1969 and was still very active in the business. He owned and operated Ron's Auction Center in Brookston from 1978-1996. Since 1997, he has served as a County Council member or as a White County Commissioner representing districts in Brookston and Monticello. He also served on various boards throughout the county. The grocery business and politics were Ron's passions. Everyday he woke up he looked forward to finding a new way to improve his business or bettering county government. These were his hobbies, his way of life. He was a member of Libanus Lodge #154 F&AM. He is also survived by two sons, Jeff (Kim) Schmierer of West Lafayette, Ed Schmierer of Kentland; Daughter, Cindy Joyner of Visalia, California; step-daughter, Michelle (Tracey) Kusley of Marietta, Georgia; nineteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Morehouse of Brookston. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ellen Schmierer; brother, William Schmierer; and step-daughter, Jalene Watson. Visitation will be from 4 pm until 8 pm, Wednesday, August 17 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home. Masonic services will be at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be at 11 am, Thursday at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available.
