Robert W. "Red" Oilar, 95, of Monticello, passed away at 6:47am, Sunday, September 12, 2021 at his residence.
He was born on September 15, 1925 in Chalmers to the late Forrest J. and Anna (Shultz) Oilar and graduated in 1943 from Brookston High School. On August 1, 1953 he married Grace B. Mathew at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington. After moving to Monticello in 1954, Red and Grace became members of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.
Red was a milkman for 39 years, first with Purdue Creamery and then with Dean Foods. At the time he retired, Red was the last home delivery milkman in Oxford, Otterbein, Delphi, Flora and Lafayette. He went on to work for the White County Highway Department for 5 years.
Red was a giving member of his community. He served on the White County Sheriff Merit Board for 28 years; the Property Tax Appeal Board for 18 years; and was a Republican Precinct Vice Committeeman for many years.
He loved the thrill of horse racing and attending live sporting events. He was a deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Red had boundless love for his family and left an imprint on all their lives. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Grace; their five children, Ed (Marsha) Oilar of Monticello, Julie (Scott) Angle of Evansville, Tom (Carla) Oilar of Monticello, John (Amy) Oilar of Northville, MI, Janie Rider of Mahomet, IL; grandchildren, Joe Oilar, Jeff Oilar, Emily (Paul) Koeltzow, Bobby Angle, Mitch Angle, Amy (Garry) Foster, Jill (Andy) Cocanower, Tommy (Chelsey) Oilar, Ethan Oilar, Jack Oilar, Alex Rider, Hannah Rider, Jacob Rider, Noah (Julia) Rider, Adam Rider and Gracie Rider; and great grandchildren, Arriana, Ava, Austin, Alivia, Hayden, Graham, Violet, Chloe, Lilly, Caleb, Adeline, Katelyn, Jack and Easton.
He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Esther Harmon, Bonnie Oilar, Yvonne Halstead, Vera Ford and daughter-in-law, Liz Oilar.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm (EDT) until 8:00 pm Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello. The Rosary will be prayed at 3:45 pm, at the funeral home on Thursday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Friday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with Father Chris Miller celebrating.
Burial will follow in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery in rural Monticello.
