Robert D. Carter, 86, of Monticello died at 10:05 pm, Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at his residence. He was born May 2, 1924 in Norway, Indiana to the late Amos A. and "Dolly" (Bowsher) Carter Sr. His marriage was to Janet P. White on June 15, 1947 in Monticello, and she survives. Carter was a 1942 graduate of Monticello High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp serving during WWII. Bob received his silver pilot wings and served as First Lieutenant pilot assigned to the 98th Bomb Group. Carter flew 22 missions and on his last mission his B-24 was the last bomber of the war shot down in the European theater. After the war he returned home and worked for Carter Concrete Block founded in 1929 by his father. He purchased the business in 1956 and operated the company until his retirement in 2005 when his son, Steve, purchased the business and continues the legacy. He was a life member and deacon at Pike Creek Church of the Brethren. He was past president of the Indiana Concrete Masonry Association. He was a life member of the American Legion. He was a member of Libanus Lodge No. 154 F&AM receiving his fifty year pin in 2009, and a member of the Crystal Chapter of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Ft. Wayne, and the Murat Shrine Valley of Indianapolis. He was a member of the Monticello Kiwanis Club. He is also survived by a son, Steve (Linda) Carter of Buffalo; daughters, Emily (Bill) Moore of Lafayette, Claudia (Jim) Earnest of Rensselaer; two Chinese foster children, Susan Luo and Dennis (Cindy) Tan; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way. He is preceded in death by a son Billy Carter; a brother, Amos Carter Jr.; and a sister Phyllis Holub. Visitation will be from 4 pm until 9 pm (EDT), Tuesday, June 29 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticllo. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m (EDT). followed by a Shrine Processional. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am (EDT), Wednesday at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Metzinger officiating. Burial will follow at Pike Creek Cemetery Memorial donations may be given to Guardian Angel Hospice of Kokomo, White County Food Pantry, or the White County Shrine Club to benefit Childrens transportation to a Shriners Hospital.
