Robert August "Bob" Nagel, 89, of Monticello, died from dementia at 1:08pm on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare Center. He was born December 13, 1923 in Chicago to the late Elmer Paul and Mary Carolyn (Fanson) Nagel. Bob graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1942 and within a month was drafted into the Army where he contributed to the WWII war effort as an engineer designing and building ponton bridges. The day after his honorable discharge, April 27, 1946 in Chicago, he married the love of his life, Elaine Rump. She died on April 20, 2008. Bob enjoyed sports, particularly baseball, dogs, dancing and just being with people. He had an extremely quick wit and always knew how to make you laugh. He loved his family more than life itself, especially his wife of 62 years, Elaine, forever his beautiful bride. He is survived by 2 sons, Craig (Marianne) Nagel of Griffith, Glenn ( Jo) Nagel of Merrillville; 2 daughters, Karen (Dan) Gribble of Hebron, Gayle (Joe) Rogers of Monticello; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life, to be held at the American Legion Post 66 at 132 N. Wiggs Street, Griffith, Indiana on March 24, 2013 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Food, drink and music will be provided. An American Legion salute will be performed at 3:00 pm. This is an open house to celebrate Bob's 89 years of living and to share the happiness he bestowed on those he touched.
