Medi Katherine Hoover

Medi Katherine (Koehler) Hoover, 72, Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Monticello, passed away in Austin, Texas on Sept. 27, 2015 at 5:30am. Medi was the oldest of three girls born in Chicago, Illinois to Albert Theodor and Medi (Anna Lackner) Koehler. The family moved from Chicago to their farm in Buffalo, Indiana when Medi was 5 years old. Medi graduated from Buffalo High School in 1960, attended college at Marquette University and received a Bachelors degree in Music from Indiana University in 1965. After graduating from music school, she taught music at the high school level and directed several high school musicals, which brought her tremendous joy. In 1966 Medi was married at Our Lady of the Lakes church in Monticello to R. Dennis Hoover, also of Monticello, and had five children. After giving birth to four of her five kids, Medi received her Juris Doctorate degree from Valparaiso University Law School in 1975 and practiced law for ten years in Valparaiso and Monticello, Indiana. In 1986, Medi moved on to become the Director of Programs at the Center for Excellence in Education, a non-profit organization in the Washington, D.C. area. She poured her heart and soul into the formative years of the Research Science Institute which is now one of the most prestigious science programs for gifted and talented high school students in the United States. Then she followed her love of water and warm weather to Florida where she raised funds for another esteemed non-profit organization, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida. In addition to her incredible career accomplishments, Medi was a loyal friend and a dedicated mother and grandmother. She was also a pianist, a dog-lover, a politically- minded world-traveler and enjoyed good food and long conversations with friends and family. Medis quick wit and deep commitment will be dearly missed by friends and family from near and far. Medi is survived by her sister, Luise Phillips with husband Steve; her five children, Anji Hoover, Riley Hoover with wife Tricia, Ted Hoover, Katie Hoover and Sam Hoover; as well as her four grandchildren, Sara Kelly, Kohl Winkle, Zach Hoover and Lola Hoover. She is preceded in death by sister, Lore Dias (1945-2014) and parents Albert and Medi Koehler. Memorial visitation will be from 10 a.m. ET until noon at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home in Monticello on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:15 p.m. ET at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with Father David Rasner officiating.
