Mary Alice (Ward) Schlegelmilch, Indianapolis, formerly of Monticello, passed away on August 5, 2021, at the age of 90. She had been in failing health for over a year.
Born in Reynolds on July 22, 1931, Mary was the daughter of Nathan L and Alice (Click) Ward. She graduated from Reynolds High School in 1949 and was class Valedictorian.
She was confirmed at St James Lutheran Church in Reynolds, which held a special place in her heart. At St James, Mary sang in the choir and was a soloist at church services, funerals, and weddings. At one of those weddings, she met her future husband, Dwight Schlegelmilch of Monticello. Mary and Dwight were married at St James Lutheran Church on August 6, 1950. They made their home in Monticello and were married 24 years until his death in 1975. Mary and Dwight were faithful members of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello, where she sang in the Chancel Choir. She was also a member of Eastern Star and Alpha Nu Music Club in Monticello.
Mary worked at her husbands consulting engineering firm in Monticello the last year of his life, and then, went to work for the White County Area Plan Commission. In 1980, she moved to Indianapolis and was employed by the CPA Society of Indiana for 11 years and later, as secretary to the Executive Vice President of the American Cancer Society, Indiana Division. She retired from Monroe Guaranty Insurance Company in 2001.Mary is survived by three children: John K Schlegelmilch, Divide, MT, Kristine Davidson (Daniel), Columbia, SC, and Melanie A Schlegelmilch, Indianapolis. One daughter, Lori Maria, preceded her in death.
Also surviving are five grandchildren: Elliot D (Margo) Schlegelmilch, Friday Harbor, WA; Evan V, and Hannah C Schlegelmilch, Bozeman, MT; Lydia K Davidson, Savannah, GA; and Emily K (Robert) Hamblin, Charlotte, NC. She is survived by sister, Kathryn "Skip" (Richard) Stockdale, Adairsville, GA, and leaves numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her daughter and husband, she is preceded in death by four brothers and sisters-in-law: Paul J (Marion) Ward; Robert L Ward; Francis N "Tanny" (Doris) Ward, and Donald W (Karen) Ward. One nephew, Stanley C Ward, also preceded her in death.
Calling will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Wednesday, August 11, 2021 followed by funeral services at 11:00 am at Springer Voorhis Draper Funeral Home. The Deacons Prayer Circle will be at 9:45 am at the funeral home. Rev. Kelly Lindsay officiating.
Burial will be immediately following at Riverview Cemetery, Monticello, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
