Mary Lou Gray

Mary Lou Gray, 86, of Monon, passed away at 7:52 am, Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette. She was born on October 21, 1927 in Monon in the family home to the late Rolla and Myrtle (Marshall) Qualkinbush. On July 29, 1950 in Hammond, she married Russell Gray, and he preceded her in death January 5, 2000. Mary Lou was first and foremost a loving mother and a homemaker, a job she took very seriously. She was a graduate of Lake Ridge Schools, Calumet High School, and studied psychology at Purdue Calumet. Once she completed her general studies at Purdue Calumet, she cared for children, worked as a caregiver for the elderly, and worked as a counselor for sheltered women. She had a great love and sincere compassion for others. Mary Lou was a member of the Monon United Methodist Church where she volunteered in the nursery, participated with the Methodist Women, was a member of the prayer circle, and lead a Bible study group. She was also a member of the Monon Current Literature Club. She enjoyed spending time at the White County Historical Society, reading, drawing, painting, writing, and doing crossword puzzles. She is survived by her sons, James (Dawn) Gray of Hobart, John (Michele) Gray of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Jeffrey Gray of Monticello; daughters-in-law, Luanne Gray of Merrillville, and Marsha Gray of Dyer; sister, Sarah Lucille (Robert) Whitman of Highland; seven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Also preceding in death were brothers, William, James, and Harry Qualkinbush; sister, Genevieve Neal; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. Visitation will be from 4pm (EDT) until 8pm (EDT), Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello, located at 202 South Illinois St. Funeral services will be at 11:30am (EDT) on Wednesday, at the funeral home with Rev. Russ Alley of the Monon United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Bedford Cemetery. Online condolences and expressions of sympathy may be exteded at www.springerfuneralhome.com
