Longtime Monticello resident, Martha Jane Lake, 93, passed away Sunday, July 1 in Murfreesboro, TN. where she had resided for the past 12 years. Martha Jane left Monticello twelve years ago to be near her daughter and family in Murfreesboro. Martha Jane resided at the Adams Place in Independent Living for 7 years, assisted living 2 years, and the Health Care unit of Adams Place for the past 3 years. Martha Jane was born Nov. 24, 1918 in Monticello, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. J.H. Kraning and Mrs. Mae Kraning, and her brother, John C. Kraning. Martha Jane graduated from Monticello High School in 1936 and Butler University. She taught school for several years in Monon, Indiana. Martha Jane married Robert Beitz in 1946 who passed away Oct. 1961. She married Beryl B. Shaw in 1966 and he passed away in 1971. Martha Jane married Forest Lake Oct. 1974 and he passed away in 1997. Survivors include one daughter, Joanne Minnick and son-in-law Ron Minnick of Murfreesboro, TN; 2 grandsons Scott Minnick and Mark Minnick both of Murfreesboro; 4 great grandchildren, Justin, Alandria, Taylor, and Haley Minnick of Murfreesboro TN; and 3 nieces, Judy Ferguson, Pennsylvania, Edna Livett of Australia, and Pam Tobies of Elgin, Illinois. While living in Monticello Martha Jane was a very active member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Tippecanoe Country Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Martha Jane was an avid bridge player and golfer for more than 50 years. Martha Jane moved to the Adams Place, an Independent Living facility in Murfreesboro, TN twelve years ago in order to be near her daughter and family. Mrs Lake passed peacefully in her sleep. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at 2 pm on Friday, July 6, at the First Presbyterian Church in Monticello with Rev. Thomas Albaum officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to the Monticello Presbyterian Church, Monticello, Indiana or to the First Presbyterian Church of Murfreesboro, TN in memory of Martha Jane Lake.
