Karen S. Ward, 73 of Monticello passed away on September 30 in Monticello.
Karen was born on August 25, 1943 in Williamsport to the late Roland L. and Kathryn (Watkins) Van Scoyoc. Mr. Van Scoyoc was superintendent of schools in Warren County for many years. On November 8, 1968, Karen married Donald W. Ward at the Presbyterian Chapel in Monticello.
Karen grew up in Williamsport, where she was active in 4-H, band and cheerleading. She was valedictorian of the Williamsport High School class of 1961, and was graduated from Purdue University in 1965. She taught school in Alhambra, California, until the fall of 1967, when she moved to Monticello and taught 6th grade at Oaklawn and Woodlawn for two years. After teaching, she devoted herself to her sons educations.
She was the seventh generation of her family to live in Indiana and was proud of her early Indiana roots. A descendant of Samuel Watkins, an organizer of Warren County in 1823, she was a member of the Society of Indiana Pioneers and served on its Board of Governors. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Charles Carroll Chapter), serving as Regent. She also was a member of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century (Post Ouiatenon Chapter) and the Daughters of the War of 1812.
Karen was a dedicated member of the Christian Science Society of West Lafayette, serving in many roles, including Sunday school teacher and superintendent, chairman of the music committee, and chairman of its board of directors. She was also a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, MA.
Karen is survived by her husband Don and her sons, Eric N. (Sarah) Ward of Cambridge, MA, John S. (Frederique) Ward of Roanoke, IN, and Bill (Emily) Ward of San Gabriel, CA; her seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kate, Paul, Jack, Henry, Silas and Samuel; and a sister, Caroline (Phil) Greene of Webster Groves, MO.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, October 3, 2016 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.
Funeral services celebrating Karens life will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will follow in St. James Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds, IN.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Christian Science Society of West Lafayette or to the Society of Indiana Pioneers in Indianapolis.
