Judith Stewart Hickman, 86, of Monticello, passed away at home on May 14, 2024. Judy was born in Logansport, IN to the late Charles and Maryann Stewart. She graduated from Logansport High School and attended Indiana University. On August 4, 1957, she married Charles W. Hickman of Logansport at the Broadway Methodist Church.
Judy moved to Monticello in 1968 and was a homemaker and a very active volunteer in the Monticello community. She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America. During her active years of Girl Scouting, she served as a troop leader for 21 years, was a leader trainer, Day Camp Director, director of many events, served on the Sycamore Girl Scout Council Board of Directors, and was a delegate to several national council meetings. She received many awards during her years of Girl Scouting including the Thanks Badge, the highest award given to an adult Girl Scout.
Judy was a volunteer with the White County Red Cross for 52 years. She was a swimming instructor, first aid and CPR instructor, board member, head of disaster services for White County, and Administrative Director of the White County unit. She received the Outstanding Volunteer award for her services.
Judy was a founding board member of the White County Literacy Volunteers and has been active since its inception in 1980 serving as a Tutor, President, Vice President, Board Member, and chairman of many activities. She was honored with the President’s Award for her dedication.
Judy was the recipient of numerous recognitions for her many hours of volunteering in White County. In addition to all of her time with the Girl Scouts, Red Cross, and Literacy Volunteers, she also found time to be a Room Mother for the Buffalo School, Treasurer of the Buffalo Elementary PTO, North White School Corp. Building Task Group member, Director of the Buffalo Summer Recreation Swim Program, Lake Shafer Property Owners Association Board Member, various activities with Tri Kappa from 1968-1976, Board Member and Treasurer of the White County United Way from 1975-1980 and was honored for her Distinguished Service, helped with Habitat for Humanity, and served as an Interviewer for the White County Food Pantry.
She was named a Woman of Distinction by the Sycamore Girl Scout Council and was the Monticello Herald Journal Volunteer of the Year in 1990. In 2005 she was presented with the Older Hoosier of the Year by the Indiana Division of Aging - Area 4 and was named a Distinguished Hoosier in 2010 by the Governor of the State of Indiana.
Judy is survived by her husband Charles of 66 years, son Robert of Monticello, daughter Susan Lamb of Texas, and daughter Jennifer (Scott) Keller of Illinois; Grandchildren Brian (Nichole), David (Ashley), Amanda (James), Kaden (Alexis), Ryan (Erin), and Aaron; Great Grandchildren, Kylie, Knox, Jacob, and Ethan, Theodore, Remy, and Issac; and niece Marian Stewart of Ohio.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 19, 2024, from 4-7pm at the Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral home in Monticello, with a funeral service on Monday, May, 20, at 10:30am.
Burial will follow the service at noon at Hughes Cemetery, also in Monticello.
