Johnson Chu M.D. died on March 11th, 2009. He was born on Sept 25, 1918 in Beijing, China and he had five other siblings. All of his siblings except one sister immigrated to America. All found significant hardship in coming to this country particularly due to communist Chinas efforts to block anyone from leaving the country. Johnson Chu graduated from St. Johns Medical School in Shanghai and then left to attend his cardiology residency at New York University Medical School. He came to America in 1949 with little money, his medical school diploma, and a suitcase. Though he had known Sylvia Cheng in Shanghai before their immigration, he courted her in New York City and they married in 1949. They had two sons Tim and Steve and six grand children: Mercedes (deceased), Maxwell, Hannah, Joseph, Rachel, and Peter Chu. Sylvia Cheng proceeded in death in 1984. Johnson Chu worked at various hospitals as well as private practice and conducted published research on pharmacological treatments for mental illness and alcoholism. He was recognized in Whos Who of Americans. Johnson Chu was known for his great generosity. He provided free and low cost medical care to the uninsured or those could not afford costly medical bills. He was compassionate to those who suffered from chronic pain, and he was especially caring to migrant worker families who could not afford healthcare. Farmers, at times traded food for healthcare. He believed in home visits and compassion as the most important cure. Johnson Chu provided sponsorship funding for several of his nieces and nephews to leave then communist China to study in America and these relatives have made notable American contributions in music, medicine, computer technology and engineering. Johnson Chu enjoyed travel and he especially loved going to Hawaii in the winter. He enjoyed sightseeing along Alaskan highways. He especially enjoyed the company of friends and family over a Chinese meal.
