John H. Slover

John H. Slover, 78, of Monticello, passed away at 10:00 pm, Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Monticello Healthcare. He was born on September 16, 1936 in Shelburn to the late John F. and Nancy "Nannie" (Lay) Slover. On June 6, 1958 he married Joan K. Foster at the Presbyterian Church inTerre Haute and she survives. He was a 1954 graduate of Shelburn High School where he graduated valedictorian of his class. He received his bachelors degree from Indiana State University and later earned his masters degree. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello where he served in various capacities. He started his career in education in Midland, IN as a math teacher. He then moved to Monticello where he taught math, was the Athletic Director, and then Assistant Principal. He was principal at Pioneer High School in Royal Center and then Buffalo. He also taught math at North White High School and then returned to Twin Lakes High School where he retired as a math teacher. Although he was successful in school administration, his true passion was teaching and being face to face with his students in the class room. He served as past President of the Classroom Teacher Association. He had his Realtor's license, was a member of the Monticello Kiwanis Club, and enjoyed his summers working at Indiana Beach in the office. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood working, and finish carpentry. In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by his sons, Bill (Nancy) Slover of Westfield, and John C. Slover of Brookston; sister, Thelma Hauger of Springfield, IL; four grandchildren, Ashley M., Payton J., William F., Sarah Jo; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Maude Thompson and Opal McCord, brother, Edward Slover Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday, May 18, 2015 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello. The Presbyterian Deacons Prayer Circle will meet at 3:45 pm Monday at the funeral home. Funeral services are private and for the family with Rev. Thomas Albaum of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello officiating. Burial will be in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello, the Alzheimer's Association, or to the White County Food Pantry with envelopes available at the funeral home.
