John E. Rayburn, 88, of Reynolds, passed away at 5:35 pm, Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at his residence in Reynolds. He was born on June 14, 1930 in West Point to the late Orville "Bill" and Ruth (Loft) Rayburn. He was first married to Barbara Akers and they later divorced. His second marriage was to Rosemary (Lane) Carter on January 1, 1989 and she survives.John was a 1948 graduate of Chalmers High School. John worked primarily as a truck driver. He started driving a semi for Roger Hanenkratt when he was 18 years old. He spent stints working at the milk plant in Remington, Chemtron, owned and operated a radiator shop in Reynolds, worked as a heavy equipment operator, and also drove over the road with his wife, Rose for six years. John had been to all the states except Alaska and Hawaii. He attended the Monticello Christian Church with his wife and was a member of the Moose Lodge for 47 years where he served in most of the lodge offices. When his sons were young, he had been a Boy Scout leader. He was a NASCAR, Jeff Gordon fan. John raced stock cars where the Monticello Christian Church is today. Along with his wife, Rose, he is survived by his children, Bruce (Kathy) Rayburn of Rensselaer, Jim Rayburn of Wolcott, Mike (Diane) Rayburn of Reynolds, Rex Carter of Winamac, Beth Carter of Monticello, and William Carter of Anderson; sister, Pat Tyler of Monon; 22 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by sons, Bob Rayburn, and Bruce Carter; siblings, Gene, Betty Jane, Frances, James, and Jack Rayburn.Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Friday, October 12, 2018 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.Funeral services celebrating John's life will begin at 7 pm, Friday at the funeral home beginning with a Moose service. Rev. Chris Dodson of the Monticello Christian Church will officiate funeral services.Committal services and burial will be at 2 pm, Saturday in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
