John Begley, 84, of Monticello, died at 6:50pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at his residence. He was born July 10, 1927 in Beattyville, KY to the late Wilgus and Bertie Mae (Tirey) Begley. His first marriage was to Regina Lillquist on July 17, 1948 in Guilford, CT. She preceded him in death on November 17, 1992. He then married the former Betty Allen on December 11, 1993 in Monticello, and she survives in Monticello. Mr. Begley received his High School diploma in 2007 when he was 80 years old., Mr. Begley was a general foreman for Alloy Rods in Monticello. He was the owner and operator of Begley Restaurant in Wolcott. He was a member of the American Legion Post 81, VFW and AMVETS all of Monticello. John was a member of the Stony Creek Fife and Drum Corp. He was proud to have played in Dwight Eisenhower's Inaugural Parade and also Inaugural Ball. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, wood working and cooking for many. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. One of his greatest accomplishments was at the age of eighty when he received his high school diploma from Lee County High School, Lee County, KY. Also surviving are three sons, William "Bill" R. Begley of Monticello, Joseph "Joe" (Diane) Begley of South Whitley, IN, John "Jack" (Jenifer) Begley of Delphi; three step sons, Larry (Deborah) Allen of Monticello, Kris (Sondra) Allen of Monticello, Ken (Lori) Allen of Brookston; step daughter, Karen Sue (Larry) Dill of Wolcott; two brothers, Herbert (Charlene) Begley of Russell Springs, KY, Billy (Brenda) Begley of Beattyville, KY; two sisters, Viola Tharp of Dayton, OH, Betty (Fay) Hollon of Beattyville, KY; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty-four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Cecelia "Cece" Begley; stepdaughter, Roxann Knoll; and five sisters. Visitation will be from 4pm until 8pm, Friday, August 12 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello. Military rites will be at 11 am, Saturday at the funeral home with funeral services immediately following. Rev. Leland McReynolds will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to American Red Cross Blood Bank. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
