Herschel James "Jim" Cocke, 83, of Monticello at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009 at his residence. He was born August 26, 1925 in Alameda County, CA. to Herbert George and Jessie (Cable) Cocke. His marriage was to Jeanette Sue Miller on December 2, 2002 in Monticello. She survives in Monticello. Herschel "Jim" Cocke joined the military at the age of 17 and was a World War II Veteran where he served in the U. S. Marine Corps as well as in the U. S. Navy. Jim worked for Transworld Airlines as an airplane mechanic for 30 years retiring in 1978. While Jim was employed by the Transworld Airlines he worked and lived in Saudi Arabia for 14 years, training them to maintain and repair airplanes. He told his wife of many important people he had met over there. He fluently spoke Arabic, Spanish and Hebrew. After retiring, he held a couple of other postions with smaller airlines and lived in various states including: Alaska, Nevada, California, Minnesota and Indiana. He was also a Cessna airplane pilot. Jim was recently employed by the Twin Lakes School Corporation as a Custondian. He enjoyed his work there for the past 6 years. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds. He liked to travel and enjoyed family life with his wife Jeanette and settled down in Monticello. He is survived by his Mother-in-Law, Norma M. Hintzman Miller of Chalmers; 2 Daughters, Patricia (Duane) Quam of Byron, Minnesota, Deborah Green (Paul) of Fort Mohave, Arizona; Step Daughter, Amy Sue (Anthony "Tony") Slusher of London, KY; Step Son, Sidney Ryan Fowler of Fort Cambell, KY; 2 Grandsons, Duane (Mary) Quam of Byron, Minnesota, Jacob Quam of Bryron, Minnesota; Great-Grandson, Robby Quam A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 10:45 am at the St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds. All who wish to attend are invited. Jim wished to have his body donated to science and his wishes were that there not be a funeral, but a memorial service at the church. Jim was a very private man and did not believe in extravagant exposures or having a fuss made over him. Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
