Glenn H. Hickman

Glenn Hickman 6/12/1923 to 1/23/2014 The lion raises his head and roars. Sound fades, but the look of the lion remains. The look. Glenn, the lion of his family, was born on June12, 1923 the son of Bessie White Hickman and Emory "Sky" Hickman. He was the youngest of eight siblings. His father died when Glenn was twelve. The youngest two boys and their mother moved to Detroit, Michigan to live with an older sister. He graduated from Southwestern High School in 1941 where he played baseball and basketball. The school had over 4,500 students in the four grades. World War 11 brought about his enlistment into the Army Air Corp. After the war, he attended the University of Michigan on the GI bill, graduating in 1950. While at U of M, he met Aileen Thayer. They were married in November of 1946. Aileen died in 2009 after 63 years of marriage. Aileen and Glenn had three children, David Hickman (Jackie), Joe Hickman (Gilda) and Jane Hickman. They are survived by five grandchildren, Greta Dutton (John), Bart Hickman(Angie), Laura Hickman, Anna Hickman and Sam Hickman. One grandchild is deceased. Five great grandchildren survive, Kate, Abby, Aiden , Jack and Connor. Glenn was co-founder of Thayer Inc. which later became Indiana Ribbon where he served as president for many years. He was proud of being on the first White County Police Merit Board and served for 16 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Goodfellows, Odd Fellows, Wildcat Investment Club and the Wolcott Wrinky Dinks. Aileen and Glenn spent winters at their condo on Fort Myers Beach in Florida. He had many busy days in the clubhouse, a garage, there with his good buddies Dave, Toby, Will, Gene, Marty, Don, Doc and Harold. Cards and talk of glory days kept them occupied. Glenn was a Republican, U of M supporter, golf, basketball and football fan, but most of all a Tippecanoe Country Club member for 60 years. He lived for Wednesdays. Golf in the afternoon, gin rummy until dinner and main event, poker until all hours. He had a rule that, heaven forbid, no one could have a birthday or anniversary on Wednesday. If anyone did, it was understood the birthday would be celebrated on Thursday. His golfing buddies have all passed away, Warren Luthi, Phil (Doc)Flora, Bob Folk, Red Little, Gary Dedaker, Jim Moore and Allen Thayer. Most of his gin and poker victims as well, Mel, Duggin, Winnie, Spank, George, Orville, Phil, Flower Boy, Clyde and Charlie. Over the last few years he had "younger" victims, Bob W., JK., Rod P., Joe M., Dan T, and George C., from the afterlife, he would like to thank his "victims" for all the memories, but especially for funding so many of his family vacations. Why does the lion roar? Maybe to let others know he is alive or maybe to let himself know he is alive. The lion roars no more, but the look will be remembered. The look. Memorials may be given to White County Food Pantry, PO Box 323, Monticello, IN 47960. Private family services were held on Saturday, January 25, 2013 Also, thanks to Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home for handling the arrangements. One last thank you to special caregivers Marcia, Dee, Janice , Norm, Karen, and Cathy, all true angels and more. See www.springerfuneralhome.com
