Elizabeth 'Beth' A. Baker

Elizabeth A. "Beth" Baker, 107, of Monticello, Indiana, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2018 at White Oak Health Campus.Born on August 30, 1910, in Turtle Creek, PA to Joseph and Clara Smith. She was the second oldest of 10 children.Beth met the dancing partner and love of her life, Gerry Baker, in Chicago Heights, IL where they were married in the parsonage of St. Agnes Catholic Church on November 9, 1933. Gerry preceded her in death at age 90, on June 2, 1996 after nearly 63 years of marriage.Beth and Gerry moved many places when Gerry was a store manager with Montgomery Ward, fulfilled their dream of owning their own furniture store when they bought Bennetts Furniture in Logansport, and later Ortstadts in Monticello. Beth was an astute bookkeeper for the business, settling for nothing short of balancing a checkbook to the penny, a standard she maintained with her personal finances well into her late Nineties. She was a voracious reader, hefty historical novels her forte, an avid bridge player and solver of crossword puzzles.Beth was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church including the St. Anne Prayer Circle of Altar & Rosary. She was also a member of Tri Kappa, Fort Nightly, Red Hats Society and Bridge-O-Rama.Beth is survived by her devoted daughters, Loral (Bob) Kirke of Des Moines, IA, and Pat Dekker of Monticello; grandchildren, Sean Dekker, Erika OBrien, Brian (Jen) Dekker, Flynn (Tamara) Dekker, Matthew Kirke, and Katie (Don) Wengert. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren.Grandchildren Kelly Gerard Kirke and Elizabeth Kirke preceded in death and have been waiting a long time for their Nana to join them in that joyful Home where they will now abide together! Beth achieved the distinction of living 107 primarily healthy years, despite an appetite for mostly cookies, candy, desserts, and no vegetables, an amazing feat. Thus she outlived most of her "birth family" but is survived by one dear sister, Josephine Stonitsch of Henrico, VA, and one brother-in-law, Charles Audet of Framingham, MA.The Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 am (EDT), on Saturday, March 24, 2018 followed by visitation until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11am at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church located at 543 South Main Street with Father David Rasner celebrating.Burial will follow in Riverview I. O. O. F. Cemetery, rural Monticello.Memorial contributions may be given to the White County food pantry or to Birthright of Delphi with envelopes available at the church.Messages of condolence may be extended at www.springerfuneralhome.comSpringer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello is entrusted with care.
