Dr. Stephen Hagen

Dr. Stephen Neal Hagen, was born on June 6, 1954, in Dubuque, IA to the late C. Neal Hagen and Patricia (Woods) Hagen who survives. His first love, for which he ardently lived, was his family. He leaves behind his adoring wife, Debbie Hagen, to whom he was married for 38 wonderful years; his children, Matthew Hagen, Heidi (Bradley) Lightner, and Hannah (John) Rizor; his grandchildren, Ava Coblentz and Vera Rizor; and his siblings, Jerry Hagen, Sue Murtha, and Diana Scott. He further dedicated his life to public service, which began when he enlisted in the United States Army immediately after graduating from Morristown High School. After serving his tour, he earned his Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from Ball State University. Stephen began his 35-year career in public education and he taught for 17 years at Twin Lakes High School. He became an administrator at Kokomo and then at Logansport School Corporations. Stephen completed his PhD. from Purdue University and became the Superintendent at Central Nine Career Center in Greenwood, IN, before he retired. During his career, he was awarded Administrator of the Year, CTE Director of the Year, and received the Educator Lilly Grant and pursued his love of wooden-boat building. As a devout Christian, Stephen was an active member of the Monticello United Methodist Church and greatly enjoyed singing in its choir. Finally, Stephen had a great passion for art and was an avid painter and photographer. He was known for his sense of humor. Visitation will be from 3 pm until 7 pm (EST), Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Funeral services will be at 11 am Monday at the Monticello United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Beeks officiating. Memorial contributions may be designated to scholarships at the Monticello United Methodist Church or the Community Foundation of White County to benefit education in public schools with envelopes available.
