Clara D. Meyer Ryan, 98, of West Lafayette formerly of Monticello passed away Monday, December 17, 2007 at 2:55 p.m. at Westminster Village. She was born August 12, 1909 on a farm near Buffalo to the late Thomas F. Downey and the the late Iva C. (Cover) Downey. Her first marriage was to Leslie J. Meyer on December 21, 1935, he passed away on June 26, 1980. She married Cloyd M. Ryan on January 14, 1984, he passed away on June 5, 1990. Mrs. Ryan was a Member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello since 1910. She graduated from Monticello High School in 1927. She also graduated from the Gary Indiana Business College in 1928. Clara Ryan was a legal secretary for over 45 years, having been employed by Sackett & Sackett, Attorneys, in Gary, Indiana. She also worked for the Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court in Chicago, IL. She was Legal Secretary to Attorney Clarence R. Cowger in Monticello for twenty years, then Office Manager and Legal Secretary to Cowger, Vaughan and Vaughan Law Firm in Monticello (Clarence R. Cowger and Charles R. Vaughan of Lafayette) for ten years. She was a former member of the Tippecanoe Country Club and the Lafayette Country Club. Mrs. Ryan enjoyed traveling in her lifetime; she enjoyed her many friends and she loved to read. She also enjoyed dancing. Survivors include: Nephew, James (Karen) Moore of The Villages, FL; Many great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; cousin and care-givers, Richard (Donna) Swayze, and close friend and care-giver, Linda (Todd) Daulton Wilkinson. She was preceded in death by her Parents; One brother, Clarence O. Downey; Two Sisters, Mae Downey and Verna D. Moore; and 2 Nephews, Thomas Moore and Robert F. Downey. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m, Friday, December 21, 2007 at The First Presbyterian Church, Monticello. Funeral services will follow at the First Presbyterian Church, Friday, December 21, 2007, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Anella McFee Officiating. Burial will take place at the Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rural Monticello. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Monticello, or to the Westminster Village Foundation, West Lafayette.
